This course is designed to serve as an introductory course to the basic concepts in psychology that analyze human behavior. Students will first delve into the fundamentals including history, science, approaches, and research in psychology. Next, students will get an introduction to biology as it relates to human psychology including genetics, the nervous system, sensation and perception, and developmental psychology. This course is also designed to give students an understanding of the psychology behind cognition, memory, learning, and motivation as well as social psychology. Students will examine the psychological effects that impact everyday life such as consciousness and sleep, stress and health, personality, psychological disorders, and therapy and treatment.

What can you expect to do after successfully completing this course?
- The student will explain and analyze the foundations of psychological science.
- The student will classify and compare the biological aspects associated with human psychology including genetics, the nervous system, sensation, and perception.
- The student will analyze and evaluate cases in learning and cognition.
- The student will explain and analyze the effects of human states of being (such as sleep, drugs, stress, and health) on the human psyche.
- The student will analyze and evaluate cases in human motivation and social cognition.
- The student will analyze and evaluate cases in personality, social psychology, and psychological disorders.
- The student will explain, analyze, and evaluate cases in developmental psychology.
- The student will explain, analyze, and compare therapy and treatment in psychology.
How much work will it be?
Each TEL course includes 135-160 contact hours. The bulk of that will be reading the material, watching the instructional videos, and taking the Check Your Knowledge Participation Quizzes. Expect to spend at least 20 hours on the larger mastery assignments and the remainder studying for and taking your midterm and final exams. You have a full calendar year from registration to complete the course.
What support will you receive?
Even though the course is asyncronous so you can work through the course on your schedule, TEL's experienced instructors are active participants in your learning. They will hold regular office hours and make themselves available for any questions on the material. TEL also has Student Coaches who will check in on your progress, organize study groups, and help you set goals so you can be successful in your course.
Age and Identification Requirements
Students must be at least 13 years old to take a course through TEL. To be eligible for transferable college credit for this course, TEL must be able to verify your identiy through a government-issued photo ID. You will need an ID to complete the proctored mid-term and final examinations, as well as to appy for a transcript. You can begin your studies in this course while obtaining the appropriate identification but you must have the government-issued photo ID prior to scheduling the mid-term exam.
